Centum and Ink

Creative Writing redefined with two categories – Centum and Ink. Choose either or both to bring out the beauty of your words.

Centum

Limited words. Unlimited creativity.

You’ll be given a few words to begin your first sentence with. You’ve to complete it using only 100 words (or lesser). You can do anything with your topic: simply describe it, write an experience that you remember, a slogan, a joke, an anecdote, a rhyme: just anything that you can think of. The topics are at random and there are no limits to your imagination. But do stick to the word limit!

Ink

The classical article writing competition: You chose from the given list of topics and write a story, a discussion, etc. on it in 300-400 words.

During the pleasant times anybody and everybody can do well but those who surpass the hard knocks should be praised. Creativity and innovativeness are factors of competitive advantage that cannot be easily replicated. But they should be updated on a continuous basis. The most profitable time to foster the talents is when calamities cause the most gifted people to worry about their present and future. This saying that “Prosperity is a great teacher; adversity a greater,” is as genuine and pertinent today as it was years ago. During The recent time the greatest economic calamity which the world faced was the recession during the latter years of this decade. Much can be drawn out from this crisis which would help us in understanding the primary causes and factors which lead to and aggravated this crisis. A recession is a decline in a country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate for two or more consecutive quarters of a year. The beginning of the disaster started due to American banks sanctioning housing loans to sub- prime borrowers. Who are sub-prime borrowers? They are people who have already defaulted in paying back the loans and were given least rating by the credit rating agencies of America. In spite of knowing their ratings, American banks granted them loans in order to earn more interest and American government allowed them to do so in order to get praise for enhancing the standard of living of its citizens. Let alone making profits, the banks could not even the principal amount. The loans were granted without any security kept as mortgage and the gravest ramification for having defaulted on loan would be to return the house or property for which the loans was taken without any further legal or corporal consequence facing the defaulter. The primary cause of the customer resorting to default was the crashing of property prices due to over supply of property. This way Subprime crisis of 2007, ended history of many banks in United States of America starting from Lehman Brothers, JP Morgan, Bear Sterns, to name a few.Bailout packages were given by American Government in order to minify the effect but it was too late. The meltdown had already started to disseminate around the globe. Globalization despite having numerous pros had caused havoc in the economies of the US dependent world. Countries which used to trade maximum with US were affected the most. In China, for instance, the combination of slower growth rate, shrinking import, rising unemployment, contraction of the manufacturing sector, rising bankruptcies had cumulative negative effect on forecasts of China’s annual GDP growth. The most optimistic forecast as of the present hovers between 5.5% to 6.5%, a significant fall from the double digit which China had enjoyed for over decade and half. India on the other hand, in spite of having the most conservative and restrictive policies drowned in the flood of the meltdown. The vast corpus of (FII) fund which was invested in the Indian market had found its way back into the pockets of its owners. Layoffs became the most preferred word for nearly all the Multinationals and domestic companies. Stock market crashed deep down leading to huge loss of valuation and resulted in reduced market cap for the companies. One time industry leader had reduced to minnows. The real estate firm such as Unitech and DLF, which on top of the valuation chart once, had lost considerable value and were now facing huge shortage of capital to continue their operations. Banking system faced liquidity crunch. Fall in GDP from 9.7% (2006-07), to 9.2% (2007-08) and 6.7% (20008-09) was cause of pain too. In his speech, President Barack H. Obama pressed out his desire to bring his country out of the crisis. He proposed to pass a bill restricting giving outsourcing work to other countries. This news sent shivers in software industry. Countries such as India whose principal trade partner was US especially in the IT domain, which is a significant contributor to India’s GDP, were badly hit. Forget career progression and job satisfaction. For a workforce beaten-up by recession, the new reality is reduced expectations, increased anxiety and a desire for job security and stability. The recession may now be coming to an end, but its impact on the economies of the countries on the global will be deep and long-lasting. The finance minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, expressed the hope that economy will reach 10% growth in not too distant a future. The minister explains in this budget (2009-10) that after a fall in GDP growth in 2008-09 to 6.7% the growth has built up and 7.2% is expected in 2009-10. There was a significant fall in the unemployment rate of India too. Therefore, Training & Development of human resources should be seen as an investment of tremendous economic value. Organisations must focus on nurturing talent if they are to survive, grow and succeed. In the long run we can say that “Money has no memory. Experience has”. You probably will not be able to remember the total investment on your education but you will always cherish the memories of school and college and the knowledge you have got.Life has always been a roller-coaster ride for everyone. Sometimes the wallet was full but sometimes even the pocket was empty. One must always be optimistic in his thoughts. What if it’s recession? Let there be recession in the economy but any recession should not affect the quality of your life. If you are not able to take your parents to a tirth yaatra, you can at least take them to a nearest temple. Time will pass, economies will revive and currency will soon regain its value. But let no recession make you lose out on your experience….

Your resume reflects a lot on what you have achieved in your past but the final decision is made when you actually meet your interviewer and are able to prove what you have given him on paper is what you have to offer in real life too.

Interview etiquette unfortunately is not stressed upon in our country. Colleges and schools too should develop activities that involve teaching students the right way to act, communicate, dress and behave.

The first impression is a lasting one, so it is very important that when you walk out after the interview, you leave with confidence that you have not only given it your best but have been able to carry yourself with poise, confidence and in a well mannered way. During my college days in the United States, we had career building work shops and also seminars on Interviews. Such workshops helped us a lot, especially when we were told about minor details that we as interviewees may miss out but the interviewer pays attention to. Here are some tips to do well in an interview:

Dress Smart :– It is important to dress smartly for an interview. Wear comfortable and conservative clothes. Indian western both are good for women but ensure you don’t wear something too flashy or too modern. For men the safest bet is a suit or a shirt, trousers and a tie.
Wear comfortable shoes. Women shouldn’t wear very high heels or shoes that they cannot carry off or are uncomfortable in. the way you dress says a lot about you so make sure you keep that in mind when picking up something from your closet.

Greet the Interviewer :– Make sure you greet the interviewer with a Sir / Madam. If he/she tell you to refer to him/her by their name then do so. Do not call them by their first name unless asked to do so. Referring to them as sir / madam looks professional and can get you brownie points.
Depending upon your comfort level you can either shake hands or fold your hands for a namaste. Usually people tend to shake hands. If you are shaking hands then make sure you don’t hold the interviewer’s hand too tightly. Have a firm grip and smile. A smile is very important; it shows you are relaxed and confident.

Break the Ice :– An ice breaker statement will put you at ease. You could talk to the interviewer about how beautiful the office campus / building is or how nice the city is (if you have come from out of town). This will make you more comfortable and will make you look confident and will show your communication skills.
For on campus interview you can ask the interviewer if this is his/her first visit to the city; if they are having a good stay and if they have gone sight seeing, etc. Refrain from personal remarks. It is safest to talk about the weather, the city or the office building.

Answer Confidently: – If you have done your homework on the job profile, the company and yourself then you should be able to confidently answer the questions posed to you. Make sure you look directly at the interviewer while answering questions.

Take Time Before Answering: – You can pause for five seconds before answering. This way you don’t look like you have like you are reciting something you have learnt. Also do not take up too much time while answering. Answer to the point and be brief.

Don’t Fidget :– Don’t be restless during an interview. Do not answer your cell phone; better still turn it off before going into the interview. Do not play with anything; keep your hands free of anything distracting. Do not tap your feet or bite your nails.

Don’t Boast :– It is much better to stick to what you have on your resume. If you do have anything to add then do so in a modest manner. Do not boast. It gives a very negative vibe to the interviewer.

Smile :– It is very important to smile during an interview. It shows that you are relaxed and also makes you look and feel confident. Everyone wants to work with a friendly face!

Ask Questions: – If you have something you want answered, ask the interviewer. Do this towards the end. Usually the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions, make use of this opportunity. Keep questions away from money and monetary related issues. You will have ample time to discuss this later. Ask what you “next steps” should be, etc.

Thank the Interviewer :– Make sure to thank the interviewer after the interview is done. Shake hands, smile and thank him / her for their time before leaving the room.

Now that you know what you should and should not do during an interview, you are ready to nail it. Just make sure that you have researched the company and the job profile thoroughly before going in for the interview.
Once you are done with you interview there are a few dos and don’ts to be followed after it. But that is next time. So do make sure to read next month’s article on “After and Interview – What NOT to do and what you SHOULD do!”

No, right? I didn’t think so. But sadly, I find myself in a world where people’s lives are being played out live on the internet, fuelled by web-portals like Orkut©, Facebook©, MySpace© & Twitter©.What might have started out innocently enough as a way to stay in touch has mutated into this sinister monster that we now know as ‘Social Networking’.

So whether it’s your next door neighbour or the third cousin of your friend’s aunt’s daughter, its an open-for-all to blast you with all the happenings in their lives, not only expecting you to give a damn, but also respond with what’s happening in your own!

Have people forgotten how to type e-mails or pick up a phone & dial? People who wouldn’t say ‘Hi’ if they ran into you in the streets suddenly become your best pals on the net!

Recent studies have shown that most people actually prefer to interact with their fellow human sitting in front of a monitor than physically talking to them. The high degree of anonymity that a faceless chat provides nudges people to lose their inhibitions that they would normally have, sometimes with disastrous consequences, case in point being the numerous cybercrime scandals that have emerged recently.

The problem is not the concept of social networking on the net, well not entirely, but the way these sites have come to be used.Instead of being tools to find long lost friends, they have become almost like blogs, and that too not very intelligible ones, where everything you’ve done is blurted out for everyone to read and suffer!

Wake up people, shut down your computer (ask someone if you don’t remember how, been a long time, hasn’t it?), go out for a walk with some actual people; and remember to not tell me about it!
